Completed project
Shrimp farm construction
The challenge was not moving the earth: it was the grade. On a shrimp farm the water reaches the ponds by gravity, so a few centimetres either way on a channel decide whether the system works at all. With the job under way we found that one of the raised channels was coming in lower than it should, and that at that level the water would not reach the whole growing area.
The project
What made it difficult, what was done, what was left behind
0101 · The challenge
The challenge was not moving the earth: it was the grade. On a shrimp farm the water reaches the ponds by gravity, so a few centimetres either way on a channel decide whether the system works at all. With the job under way we found that one of the raised channels was coming in lower than it should, and that at that level the water would not reach the whole growing area.
0202 · The scope
Clearing and site preparation, excavation of the ponds, and construction of the perimeter berms from the same excavated material, compacted for stability. Around them, close to 8 kilometres of raised feeder channels, plus the drainage channels and outlets that let the ponds empty by gravity. Excavators, crawler dozers, backhoe loaders and compaction equipment worked the same front together.
03 · The result
We stopped and checked before going on. We brought in survey work to verify the channel levels, corrected the grade and carried on with the alignment adjusted. The feeder system was left working and the ponds fill as intended. A grade error found at the end would have meant rebuilding kilometres of channel.
