Completed project
Arapuey river channelisation
Widening and deepening four kilometres of riverbed so it carries more water in flood. The section calculation is what decides the outcome: at normal flow almost any section will do, and the problem shows up on the day of high discharge, when there is no longer any way to fix it.
The project
What made it difficult, what was done, what was left behind
0101 · The challenge
Widening and deepening four kilometres of riverbed so it carries more water in flood. The section calculation is what decides the outcome: at normal flow almost any section will do, and the problem shows up on the day of high discharge, when there is no longer any way to fix it.
0202 · The scope
Widening of the bed, which went from around 3 metres across to about 6, plus the deepening needed to increase its hydraulic capacity. The excavated material — some 150,000 m³ — was used to raise berms on both sides of the reach, some 5 metres high and 6 wide, shaped and compacted along the full four kilometres. The work was carried out mainly with excavators.
03 · The result
With the job well under way we went back over the numbers and saw that the section we were building could fall short in flood. We recalculated and adjusted the excavation to increase the capacity of the bed before finishing the reach. The river was left twice as wide, deeper, and with berms on both sides.
